Hints Tips
To help you, here are some hints and tips to refer to when applying for any vacancy.
DO:
Read the job advertisement very carefully before applying particularly the section outlining required skills and experience.
Make sure that you definitely meet all of the minimum criteria required for the job - otherwise it may be a mere waste of time.
Keep to the point, focusing on the quality of your achievements, not the quantity.
Concentrate on your achievements and what you have learnt; this enhances your responsibility list. Use real examples which prove that you can do what you say you can (e.g; products launched, sales achieved, teams managed, etc).
Achievements should be short, bullet pointed statements which include your role, the action you took and the result of your action.
Check thoroughly for correct spelling and grammar (but not only with a spell checker); if helpful why not get a second opinion?
Prove that you have done your homework and are motivated (use the web, listen to/ watch relevant output and/or research your area, read any relevant press etc).
Be honest and factual.
DON'T:
Apply if you do not meet the required level of skill and experience sought.
List all the one-day training courses you have ever been on, unless any of them are relevant to the job.
Use elaborate fonts or colors - keep it simple.
Forget that a good application is just a tool to get you an interview - it will not get you the job alone, the rest is down to you.
Write too much - be as concise and relevant as you can.
Include a separate CV unless you have been asked to do so.
Use jargon or complicated language - 'Simple Is Best'.
Send examples of your work or qualifications to support your application, unless asked for.
Preparing for Your First Interview
We are aware how uncomfortable interviewing can be, especially when someone is going into details about your resume or application. Try to relax and you will do just fine.
Since we are trying to get to know you better, we will need your help, so be sure to express your strengths and skills clearly. You will also want to explain the areas you feel you need to develop - do not be afraid to share with us. We can provide you with extensive training once you join us, so if you have got a soft area or two, we can help strengthen your expertise in those areas.
Get yourself rest! This is very important, even in first interviews that are typically short. In a second interview round, if required, you will definitely want to arrive relaxed, because you may have to discuss in details with the interviewing body.
The Interview
Listen well. Pay attention to the questions asked, and make sure you give concise answers.
Be honest! Nobody's going to ask you if you have 20 years of experience.
We know you are just graduating. Simply emphasize your strengths for our benefit.
Be direct. If you do not understand a question, ask to have it repeated.
It always makes a difference when you come across as confident and comfortable.
The Interview Process?
We have a panel of interviewers, relevant to the nature of the post. A senior member of the directorate along with the managers and HR staff might be present.
Advice
You might be surprised to learn that as many as 75% of candidates perform poorly at interviews. In most cases, it comes down to them not having the necessary interview skills rather than them being unsuitable for the job. So if you find interviews a daunting prospect, the following advice should come in quite handy.
Pre-interview Preparation
The first step towards any successful interview is the preparation.
Research the department and its programming - this will improve your presentation and ensure that you sound confident, organized, and motivated. The interviewers will be impressed by your knowledge and the effort you have put into your preparation.
Know the name of the people who will be on the interview panel.
Be sure you know how to get to your interview, and leave plenty of time in which to do it.
Read the job advertisement or web posting thoroughly and carefully. Be clear about how you meet the criteria asked for, especially when it comes to responsibilities you have had and any other abilities that make you a particularly good candidate.
Study the job description, which outlines in detail the content and duties of the job and the qualities expected of the successful applicant.
The Interview
Try not to be late, allow yourself plenty of time in case you may not get lost. First impressions count, so dress appropriately.
Be polite.
Try to stay focused on the person asking the questions - give them your full attention.
Sound positive about yourself and your achievements.
Don't be negative about your previous employer.
Give yourself time to think - don't be afraid to pause if you need to think about your answer.
Be clear and brief in your communication - try not to ramble.
Always be prepared to give real life examples to support any of your claims.
Ask the interviewer for clarification if you're not sure what s/he is asks for.
Focus on your strengths.
Avoid jargon.
Don't under-estimate your skills and abilities.
If you don't know the answer to a question, say so. There is nothing wrong with being honest. Always come prepared with questions of your own to ask at the end of the interview. For example you may wish to know about the working environment, whether you will be working alone or as part of a larger team, what the prospects for training and promotion are etc. All this shows that you have given the role some serious thought and are genuinely interested.
